VN, Haiti agree to enhance cooperation in agriculture, telecommunications

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan and President of the Senate of Haiti Youri Latortue held talks on June 19 during the Haitian leader’s official visit to Viet Nam from June 17-22. 
Ms. Ngan hailed the visit of the delegation, highlighting the first bilateral delegation exchange between the two nations’ legislative bodies as helping promote the two sides’ relationship.
She appraised Haiti’s achievements in its socio-economic development and integration, contributing to raising the role and prestige of Haiti in the region and the world.  
She thanked the Haiti Government for recognizing Viet Nam’s market economy status and supporting the country’s bid to become a member of the UN Human Rights Council for 2014-2016 as well as the UN Economic and Social Council for 2016-2018. 
NA Chairwoman Ngan asked for Haiti’s continued support for Viet Nam in running for a non-permanent seat at the UN Security Council for 2020-2021 and the country’s candidacy for the post of the UNESCO Director General for 2017-2021. 
President Youri Latortue proposed the two nations enhance cooperation in all fields, including telecommunication and agriculture, expecting Viet Nam to provide technical assistance in these areas.
Ms. Ngan applauded the breakthrough in the two-way trade value from US$42 million in 2013 to US$50 million in 2015.
During the talks, the two sides discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern, including the East Sea matter. 
The two legislative leaders agreed that the issue must be resolved via peaceful means, including diplomatic and legal processes, in accordance with international law, including the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.
